Hot-rolled Steel: Hot-rolled steel has been used for more than a century for the construction of doors and windows. The hot-rolling process gives the profiles a very special and unique texture, which amplifies the natural and raw character of steel. Signs of rolling and slight surface imperfections, which architects and designers called “beauty marks”, constitute the distinctive character of this material and make it very popular for profiles of particular slimness and elegance.

The corners of windows and doors made from hot rolled steel are always welded. Depending on the desired visual quality, welds can be either left natural or ground flat. Often welds are emphasized by brushing them to a silver metallic shine or blackened with special patinas. The FerroFinestra W20 and FerroFinestra W40 series re-introduce hot rolling in the original production method of the Thirties, updated with the application of modern technologies.

Cold-Formed Steel/Bright and Galvanized: Cold-formed steel profiles – whether galvanized or bright – have a uniform texture, which lends itself well to multiple finishes. Light brushing or blackening can be used as an alternative to traditional painting, and allow a high level of customization of the frame. The corners of cold rolled steel doors and windows are always welded.

Depending on the desired visual quality, the welds can be grounded flat, left natural or even emphasized by brushing or blackened with special patinas. The Series FerroFinestra W50 TB, FerroFinestra W75 TB and Mogs M65 TB, also in the lift&slide systems, are cold formed in high-precision production lines to ensure perfect windows and doors.

Stainless Steel: The technical properties and remarkable resistance over time make stainless steel a very popular material used in construction and architecture since 1920. Its exceptional characteristics allow its use even in areas subject to strong environmental aggression, for roofs, curtain walls, doors and windows of very long duration, in almost total absence of maintenance.

Appreciated above all for its metallic shine, stainless steel allows extreme design freedom in terms of surface finishes, such as “black stainless steel”, which can be obtained by applying special patinas on the brushed or sandblasted surface. Thanks to its natural and evocative texture, black stainless steel gives windows and doors an exclusive character. The corners of windows and doors made from cold rolled stainless steel profiles are mainly welded and welds are ground flat and polished.

The steel chosen by Ottostumm | Mogs in the family products FerroFinestra W75 TB, Mogs M65 TB, MLS72 TB, WLS72 TB and also for the Neutra Minimal Sliding is considered as the best stainless steel alloy, AISI 316L stainless steel, containing the largest amount of molybdenum. AISI 316L is normally called “marine steel” because it is able to resist corrosion even in a highly salty environment.

Cor-Ten Steel: Cor-Ten is a material of great scenic effect and extraordinary elegance. In recent years, it has become a very popular material for windows and doors, both for restoration and for new buildings. Cor-Ten is a natural, living material that takes on different and unique shades over time and through exposure to the elements.

The natural oxidation process can also be controlled chemically, with procedures that reduce natural “bleeding”. In order to contain these phenomena, however, it is advisable to plan periodic treatments with applications of suitable waxes or oils. The corners of the frames are suitably welded, and the welding mark can be left natural or ground flat.

Color-Coated Steel: Coating steel, including stainless steel, has a dual function. From a technical point of view it further increases the material’s resistance to corrosion, while from a design point of view it allows enormous freedom of choice, enabling the design of the frames to be customized and fully respond to the architectural style.

From the classic black and white colours to the most original and material textures, steel painted in this way combines the refined slenderness of steel profiles with the extraordinary physical and mechanical performance of the material.

Architectural Bronze: A noble, ancient and prestigious metal, bronze has always been a favourite material for architects because of its aesthetic characteristics and uniqueness. Architectural bronze is a living, changing material, subject to natural oxidation or weathering that gives it warm tones and variegated nuances, ranging from golden yellow to copper red, from different shades of classic browns to dark browns with the characteristic emergence of copper green.

The natural oxidation process can be accelerated and calibrated by patinating the frame to obtain the chromatic effect most in harmony with the style of the façade and interior, or completely avoided by proceeding directly to a protective finishing treatment, which allows the original golden shine of the material to be maintained. The corners of windows and doors made of Architectural Bronze profiles, once welded, are ground flat to achieve a homogeneous appearance.

Ottostumm | Mogs Architectural Bronze is a copper alloy specially designed for extrusion in high precision production lines. With a compact surface, suitable for bending, satin or polishable, it represents the natural evolution of an ancient material reinterpreted for contemporary architecture.
