Project Overview

Low Lane is a modern reinterpretation of the iconic New England coastal home, inspired by the original Low Lane house designed nearly 150 years ago by McKim, Mead, and White. Set on a 10-acre parcel overlooking Narragansett Bay, this residence offers a grand gathering space for a multigenerational family with deep ties to the maritime heritage of the region.

Design Concept

Rooted in the maritime beauty of Narragansett Bay, Low Lane blends historical reverence with modern architectural innovation. Designed as a sanctuary for three generations of sailors, the home combines functionality with breathtaking views, creating a legacy of coastal living for the modern era.

Key Features

Site & Landscape: Nestled on a hillside, the home’s levels cascade 50 feet down to the bay, offering sweeping water views and blending naturally with the landscape for both openness and privacy.

Innovative Layout: A propeller-shaped layout aligns three levels with bay views, with outdoor terraces on each level, extending the indoor spaces into the natural landscape.

Central Gathering Space: Anchored by a two-story living room, the home’s layout includes a private south wing and a kitchen/family room in the north wing, with guest suites and technical spaces on the lower level.

Legacy & Inspiration: Rooted in the region’s maritime tradition, Low Lane combines the historical charm of the original design with modern coastal sophistication, embodying a vision of lasting family legacy.

Outcome

Low Lane offers a refined, modern sanctuary that pays homage to its historical roots, inviting residents to enjoy a timeless connection to the beauty and heritage of New England’s coastal landscape.
